Are the Side Effects of Antidepressants Underestimated?
Since the 1980s, people around the world have had access to antidepressants that treat depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and a variety of other psychiatric disorders. Some of the most common antidepressants are escitalopram (Lexapro), fluoxetine (Prozac), sertraline (Zoloft), fluvoxamine (Luvox), paroxetine (Paxil), citalopram (Celexa) and duloxetine (Cymbalta).
During this time, the prescription of these drugs has more than doubled, which in itself is cause for concern. While working on reducing symptoms of depression, it has also been observed that they have some adverse side effects. This is expected from all medications, but could the side effects of these antidepressants outweigh their benefits?
